Quinn popped the clip out of his gun and fed another bullet into it with his thumb.
Looks like Ellie's going to need a minute.
She just sat there staring at what used to be the scientist kid. Quinn could understand. Of course, he didn't feel anything himself, even though he'd pulled the trigger. But he'd seen it enough times to recognize when someone was hurt and confused. He could give her a minute. He fed the clip back into the butt of his gun.
But only a minute. I'm ready to call it a day.
"We have to move," he said eventually.
Slowly, she looked up at Quinn. "Yeah. Okay."
Finally!
But when she got up she just stood there.
"Hey," he said. "Let's go." I'm about done with this bullshit.
"We can't go," she said, not making eye contact. "Not without blowing this place up."
"Oh, we're going to blow this place to shit."
She looked him in the eyes then. "Oh, good. I thought maybe thatâ¦"
"That I didn't give a shit about six billion people getting killed?" She nodded sheepishly and he went on. "Can't say for sure that I do. I'm going to blow this place up for a different reason."
"What's that?"
"So they'll think I'm dead." He picked up one of the gym bags. Put the briefcase with the syringes into it. Indicated for her to grab the other one with a nod. "Because if they think that, they're not going to see me coming."
She bent over. Grabbed the other bag. "What do you mean?"
He started down the hall, then quickly realized that he didn't really know where to go. "I don't know about you, Ellie. But if someone tries to kill me, I kill them right back." He put the bag down. "Let's get a look at these bombs."
He knelt down and unzipped the bag. Dug around inside until he found the explosives. At least he assumed they were the explosives. Twelve rectangular blocks wrapped in plain brown paper marked with numbers that meant nothing to him and words that looked too long to be real as well as being impossible to pronounce. Taped to each one was a plastic box holding a nest of wires and electrical bits.
"Shit," he said. "What do we do with these?"
Ellie stepped up behind him and looked over his shoulder. "Hex-a-nitr-o," she began, trying to sound out the longest word on the package. She gave up before she was even a quarter of the way through it. "You don't know how to set a bomb? Don't they teach that in hitman school?"
Her delivery was crappy, Quinn thought, but at least she's trying to be funny.
"Never came up."
"Shit," Ellie echoed him. Then she pointed into the bag. "What's on those papers?"
Quinn dug a sheet out and glanced at it, then barked out a laugh. "I should have known. Gold Buttons and his bozos weren't military. They didn't know how to set a bomb either." He shook the paper at Ellie. "These are instructions."
Ellie almost smiled at that but Quinn watched it die stillborn.
